Commonwealth-Parkville School

San Juan, Puerto Rico

My experience was amazing!  Going to [Commonwealth-Parkville] on my own for two weeks was a life-changing experience…I loved Old San Juan!  The city was really nice and full of history…

General Information

Commonwealth High School is a component of the Caribbean Preparatory School.  The Commonwealth campus is located in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, in the heart of the San Juan metropolitan area.  CHS is a small, private school (enrollment approximately 225 students) grades 7 through 12, which stresses an intense teacher/student relationship as part of a program of studies that seeks to develop to its fullest the potential of each student.  All classes at CHS (with the exception of Spanish) are taught in English.  The size of the school permits a creative atmosphere among faculty members and between faculty and students.  Along with high academic standards, students are encouraged to participate in numerous extracurricular activities that include an excellent sports program, community service programs, a spring musical production, and programs such as the Model United Nations, English Forensics, Spanish “Oratoria”, “Close Up,” and others.

Program

The program at Commonwealth offers visiting 10th-12th grade students an intense, although brief, exposure to Puerto Rican culture and society, within its Caribbean and Latin American context, in order to promote among participants a greater understanding of Hispanic/Puerto Rican culture.  Areas in the program may include: ecology, music, drama, the arts, and Puerto Rican cuisine.

A maximum of five Network students will be accepted each year.  Applications should be received before November 14. As space is limited, interested students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Students will visit museums, parks, natural reserves, and towns around the island and may participate in conferences, dialogues and workshops. The program will also include opportunities for participants to enjoy the beauty of Puerto Rico’s climate, beaches, mountains and hospitality.

Living Arrangements and Travel

Network students live with families of CHS students.  Arrangements will be made on the basis of availability and application date.  Students at CHS wear uniforms on campus.  Although Network participants would not be expected to wear uniforms, appropriate and comparable dress is required.  Polo shirts, dark pants or jeans (in good condition), and tennis shoes will be acceptable.  Please no shorts, bathing suit pants or beach attire (including sandals).

Total cost for the various field trips (kayaking, horseback riding, visits to Old San Juan and El Yunque among others) averages about $200. Students should bring lunch money in the amount of approximately $5 per day.

Students should fly into San Juan International Airport (Luis Muñoz Marín Airport).  The host families will pick students up.  Do not use taxis.

Language Requirements

Although all classes at Commonwealth (except Spanish classes) are conducted in English, a basic knowledge of Spanish is considered to be beneficial to fully appreciate the experience.  More importantly, students who apply for this program MUST possess the maturity and flexibility that will allow them to adapt to a different culture and climate.

Application Procedure

Students should complete the Network Student Information form and return it to the home school Network Advisor.

Dates

Commonwealth-Parkville accepts Network students during the third and fourth weeks in January. See the School Calendar for vacation dates.
